ESRC supports the development of research skills in a variety of ways. To make sure we understand the needs of researchers and organisations we have used the following evidence:
- Research skills evidence synthesis
- Independent review of skills needs at the doctoral stage led by Technopolis
- Independent DDRS Steering Group report exploring skills needs across career stages
- Fit for the future: research leadership matters
- Supporting research leaders in the social sciences
Developing capability
We fund the Research Capability Hub to coordinate and enhance training provision across sectors. The hub will offer:
- scalable, innovative, personalised learning pathways using platforms like OpenLearn Create
- lifelong learning and professional development opportunities for researchers at every career stage
- skills that enable researchers to address complex societal challenges and inform evidence-based policymaking
- partnerships to improve access, relevance and coordination of training

Data-driven research skills
One of our priorities is making sure researchers have the skills to use large and complex data sets and maximise their potential.
Social scientists need both the technical skills and the robust conceptual and methodological understanding necessary to design and undertake data-driven research in efficient, reproducible, and methodologically responsible ways. The skills that are required span qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches.
Supporting the development of data-driven research skills is a priority area for the Research Capability Hub.
