UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is represented in Europe by the UKRI Brussels Office.
The office works with other EU-facing functions across UKRI, to support the UK’s involvement in the EU’s key research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe. The programme has a budget of €95.5 billion and runs until 2027.
UKRI Brussels works closely with partners across government, the UK Mission to the EU, and teams across UKRI to maximise UK engagement in Horizon Europe.
Our priorities are to:
- monitor EU Commission policies
- advocate for the UK and promote the UK’s research and innovation strengths and capabilities
- liaise with EU institutions and other key stakeholders working in the EU research and innovation landscape
Supporting UK researchers and innovators to participate in Horizon Europe
UK academics and businesses secured over €7 billion from Horizon 2020, the EU’s previous funding programme. The UK was the second highest recipient of EU grant funding after Germany.
The UKRI Horizon Europe team provide support to enable UK researcher and innovators to participate in Horizon Europe. After the UK’s association to the programme in 2024, the UK’s performance has strengthened across multiple metrics in 2024 relative to 2023, with key highlights showing:
- UK funding share increased from 5.8% in 2023 to 9.3% in 2024
- UK share of eligible proposals increased from 19.0% in 2023 to 24.1% in 2024
UKRI Brussels is part of the wider UKRI Horizon Europe team, supporting all aspects of European engagement. We work closely with National Contact Points (NCPs) based across UKRI, and work alongside the UKRI Horizon Guarantee.
NCPs are appointed by the UK government to give free and impartial advice on Horizon Europe. NCPs can provide support to engage with all Horizon Europe funding opportunities.
