The scope and what we're doing

The mission of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) is to enable the best science by supporting talented researchers, stimulating scientific exchange and advancing policies for a world-class European research environment.

EMBO membership consists of over 1,800 of the world’s leading life scientists. Its members are dedicated to promoting excellence in Europe’s life sciences by recognising and fostering talented scientists.

EMBO promotes excellence in life sciences by offering funding, training and networking. These activities attract thousands of scientists every year, promoting collaboration in all areas of life science research.

The European molecular biology conference

The European Molecular Biology Conference, founded in 1969 and comprising 30 member states, is the intergovernmental funding body for EMBO. The EMBC president, two vice presidents and a secretary general lead the conference and governments of the member states nominate delegates. The Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) represent the UK as EMBC delegates.

The conference is responsible for the general programme; however, its execution is entrusted by the conference to EMBO. The general programme primarily focuses on:

  • the provision of training, teaching and research scholarships
  • the establishment of programmes for courses, workshops in the life sciences.

Opportunities, support and resources available

EMBO offers awards and financial support for scientists at all stages of their careers that help to create an environment where researchers can achieve their best work.
