UKRI artificial intelligence Centres for Doctoral Training

The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) artificial intelligence (AI) Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) are training a new generation of PhD students. They will develop novel AI methodology and use AI technology in areas such as:

  • improving healthcare
  • tackling climate change
  • creating new commercial opportunities.

The centres are based at 14 universities and include partnerships with over 300 organisations including:

  • the NHS
  • AstraZeneca
  • Rolls-Royce
  • Google.

Investing in AI skills

£100 million has been invested in the UKRI AI CDTs following the government’s commitment to invest in AI skills as part of the AI sector deal.

This has leveraged an additional £78 million from project partners and £23 million from the universities. Around 1000 students will be funded over eight years.

This followed the independent report from Professor Dame Wendy Hall and Jérôme Pesenti, Growing the artificial intelligence industry in the UK.
