We believe that the results of publicly-funded research should be shared as widely and as freely as possible and be easy to re-use – what’s known as open access.
If you are awarded UKRI funding you will be expected to follow open access principles.

Block grants to support compliance with open access
Open access block grants are issued to research organisations in receipt of research council funding to help them comply with our open access policies.
The amount your organisation will receive is calculated using an algorithm. It is based on the level of direct staffing costs of the organisation.

What your research organisation needs to report
All research organisations funded by the research councils are required to report on their compliance with our open access policy every year.
We do this to help us understand:
- the number of peer-reviewed research papers that are published under open access terms and how our policies are supporting this
- the different routes research organisations are taking in delivering open access
- any issues that research organisations are facing in implementing open access policies.
If your research organisation receives a block grant, it must report on how the organisation has spent this money.
If your research organisation does not receive a block grant, there is an option to report any costs the organisation has incurred in meeting our policy requirements.
The reporting process is managed by Jisc.

Timeline for reporting
The process for open access block grants follows a set timeline every year.
|February to March||
We will email the open access contact at your research organisation to let them know when they will be able to view the block grant offer documents.
These are made available and issued in Joint Electronic Submissions system (Je-S). Grants are paid every quarter in four equal payments.
|March to April||
The open access contact at your research organisation will review the offer document with the organisation’s submitter pool. The submitter pool is then responsible for accepting the grant via Je-S.
You can find contact details for your submitter pool through the Je-S helpdesk.
Once the grant has been accepted, your research organisation’s submitter pool should then complete the start confirmation in Je-S.
The start date must be 1 April. The submitter pool is responsible for checking the date.
|31 March (following year)||Grant end date.|
|30 June (following year)||
All funding award holders must submit their final expenditure statements via Je-S by this date.
Your research organisation’s open access contact should provide the spend value of the statement to the submitter pool team to enter into Je-S.
We hold the fourth and final payment until we receive your final expenditure statement and reconcile the grant.
|31 August (following year)||The open access contact at your research organisation should fill in and submit their compliance report using the template by this date.|
