Future Leaders Fellowships

The Future Leaders Fellowships scheme supports researchers and innovators who are ready to lead their own programme and become leaders in their field.

It is open to people working in universities, businesses and research organisations.

The scheme:

  • provides four years of funding, with the option to apply for up to three additional years
  • supports research and innovation across the whole UK Research and Innovation remit
  • is open to researchers and innovators working across academia and industry

Who can apply

Your fellowship must be hosted by a UK-based:

  • university
  • business
  • other eligible research organisation

Check if your organisation is eligible.

Your host organisation must support your application. If your fellowship is hosted by a university, the organisation must commit to providing open-ended independent research or innovation position during or after the fellowship.

You can apply if you:

  • are ready to lead your own research or innovation programme
  • will be based at the UK host organisation for the duration of the fellowship

Supporting career development

A Future Leaders Fellowship supports your career development by:

  • supporting movement between academia, business and other sectors
  • supporting researchers and innovators returning from a career break
  • providing funding for training and professional development
  • allowing flexible working, including part-time working and job shares
  • offering opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and sectors
