How to do media relations - ESRC

Identifying the right media

Communicating successfully to a variety of audiences will entail identifying the key media outlets to reach those audiences.

You will need to establish who the target audiences are for your research, and then select the appropriate media. They may include:

  • specialist press that is read by influential people in your field. It will likely be your main focus and you should develop good relationships with journalists
  • national press, which is important for high profile projects, especially those which require a government response
  • regional and local press
  • broadcast media, covering radio and TV
  • social and online media.
