Collaborate with researchers in Brazil

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and FAPESP’s lead agency agreement allows UKRI to assess joint applications from eligible UK and Brazil-based researchers from the state of São Paulo on behalf of both organisations.

UKRI and FAPESP will co-fund applications submitted to responsive mode funding opportunities via selected funding opportunities.

Stephen Hawking fellowship

You can apply if you are a postdoctoral researcher working in theoretical physics or related areas of mathematics and computer science.

Each year we aim to fund up to 10 of the next generation’s visionary scientists. Fellowships can last for up to four years and the funding you can receive varies widely.

Funding large or complex scientific projects

Apply for funding to develop a large or complex scientific project.

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for UKRI funding.

Your project must be focused on one of the following:

  • particle physics
  • nuclear physics
  • astronomy
  • particle astrophysics
  • accelerator physics
  • computing for physics.

Daphne Jackson fellowship

These fellowships are for those looking to return to a research career after a break. Fellowships combine a personalised retraining programme with a challenging research project. They are flexible, usually lasting two years at 0.5 full-time equivalent, although some UKRI funders may award longer.

STFC innovations partnership scheme fellowship

Institutions can apply for funding to support a knowledge exchange and commercialisation professional for up to four years, to cultivate opportunities to turn STFC-funded research into commercial products and services or promote opportunities arising out of the research to other users. We will fund 40% of the full economic costs. Host institutions are expected to make a financial contribution to demonstrate their support.

Return to research support bursary

You can apply for this bursary if you are a researcher looking to return to an academic research career after a break of two or more years.

You can get funding of up to £2,500 for no more than six months to support you in developing a proposal suitable for submission to the STFC fellowship scheme.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships help businesses to partner with an academic organisation, research organisation or a Catapult, to employ a graduate with the skills and knowledge that can help the business to innovate and grow.

Panel for the Allocation of Telescope Time travel grant

Apply to the Panel for the Allocation of Telescope Time (PATT) to support competitively awarded science observation time at astronomy facilities. This can be through:

  • a grant – over £5,000
  • a claim for travel and subsistence – under £5,000.

STFC: European Southern Observatory fellowship

The European Southern Observatory fellowship programme is designed to help young scientists reach the next stage of their scientific career. You can apply for a postdoctoral fellowship in either Garching (Germany) or Santiago (Chile). You will receive a basic salary funded by ESO.
