Geographical distribution of funding

Why we analyse geographical data

The geographical distribution of funding report is an annual publication mapping UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) investments across the UK. This improves transparency and enables further place-based analysis, while also strengthening the evidence base for alignment with government priorities.

In this section you will find:

  • longitudinal data on where and how much funding UKRI has invested, by financial year
  • regional breakdowns of UKRI data
  • data on research and innovation funding provided by national funding bodies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • contextual data by region and nation, including population, gross value added and the number of businesses and researchers

Throughout these reports, statistics are presented according to the Office for National Statistics’ geocode standard of International Territorial Levels (ITLs).

ITL areas correspond directly to EU’s Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics (NUTS), which were used in the UK until 2021. This means that the maps presented in recent publications can be compared to previous reports.

Find out more about ITL areas from the Office for National Statistics.
