In the run-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), we asked our researchers to tell us about their work and the challenges of tackling climate change.
Dr Gabriel Pérez is a research fellow at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.
Gabriel is researching options for new battery materials to create longer-lasting, cheaper, and smaller batteries that can power bigger devices. When a new material is made it is sent to Gabriel or measured beforehand and sent as data.
Gabriel’s work involves trying to understand:
- the atomic structure of that material
- how the material is going to behave
- why is it not behaving the way that it should be behaving
- what can be done to improve it.
Gabriel says:
I think I wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that when we all are young, we have this desire to change the world or to do something good for the world. Obviously with the climate crisis this is something that needs the effort from everyone.
To be able to contribute at least a tiny bit to fighting climate change, it’s really motivating. It’s a really good thing that what you are doing is going to hopefully make a difference to the future and that it’s going to turn things for the good.
