Funding opportunity: EPSRC discipline hopping in ICT, Nov 2023: responsive mode

Discipline hopping in ICT grants are for researchers based at an eligible UK research organisation.

You may either:

  • have a background in ICT and propose to use your research skills in a new discipline
  • have other expertise and wish to learn ICT research skills and apply them in your home discipline

You must be ‘hopping’ into or from one of the ICT research areas covered by this funding opportunity.

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) will award 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) of the project.

What we're looking for

Aim

This is an opportunity for ICT researchers to use their expertise in other disciplines, or for researchers from other fields to apply their expertise to ICT. You can apply for a discipline-hopping in ICT grant in any field of research relevant to the UKRI remit.

In order to be eligible to apply for funding through this funding opportunity, you must be ‘hopping’ into or from one of the ICT research areas covered by this funding opportunity.

You should have a proven track record of research in your home discipline and demonstrate how you would develop skills and collaborations with other disciplines or users.

You must show how you will use interdisciplinary research and collaborative development to benefit the ICT research community.

You could carry out a discipline hop to:

  • gain skills and knowledge to open up a new cross-disciplinary research area or answer a specific cross-disciplinary research question
  • explore the feasibility of working with other disciplines on a project
  • learn a new technique, tool or method that you can apply to your own research

Duration

Your period of discipline-hopping could last between three and 24 months, and the pattern of work could vary. For example, you could:

  • work in another university department at your home institution for one day a week for 12 months
  • travel to a different research institution or company in the UK or go abroad for three months full time
  • re-skill or train in a relevant area over a longer period of time

Your pattern of work should be appropriate for the research being conducted and outlined in the application. We expect you to immerse yourself in the discipline, for example, by a move of location or department.

Funding available

We will award 80% of the FEC of the project, with your organisation covering the remaining balance.

What we will fund

We will fund:

  • salary of the project lead (previously principal investigator)
  • travel and subsistence while away from the home institution
  • training courses or development opportunities, including those for commercialisation and knowledge exchange
  • a project co-lead (previously co-investigator) at the host institution to provide the necessary training and guidance
  • consumables to carry out the research
  • spending on broadening the impact of the discipline-hop and maximising collaborative work between ICT and other disciplines

What we will not fund

We will not fund:

  • replacement salary costs at your home institution
  • project co-leads or project partners from overseas or in industry (although overseas and industry collaborators can be part of your application)
  • equipment over £10,000

How to apply

EPSRC reviewed its approach to responsive mode opportunities on the UKRI Funding Service following our October 2023 closing dates. For more information on our approach, including timelines, see EPSRC’s transition to the new Funding Service.

From November 2023, our approach to responsive mode will change. We will not publish closing dates for individual rounds, instead we will batch applications internally. You should apply when their application is ready for submission and not be concerned about a closing date.

Due to systems requirements a closing date will appear on the Funding Service approximately 18 months from the publication of this opportunity.

Please do not wait for this date to submit your application – we will be processing applications throughout 2024 and 2025.

Applications will be batched for assessment and sent to the most appropriate responsive mode panel meeting when they reach this stage of the process. Applications submitted in late 2023 and early 2024 are likely to be considered at panels in September 2024. Our responsive mode panel meetings are: Engineering, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. These panels are expected to run on a quarterly basis after September 2024.

Due to the agile development of the Funding Service, we will need to make changes to this opportunity to allow technical updates or new policies to be implemented. No changes are planned to EPSRC responsive mode opportunities before April 2025. However, if updates are required, we will communicate these changes at least eight weeks before they are implemented (excluding major public holiday periods).

We are running this funding opportunity on the new Funding Service. You cannot apply on the Joint Electronic Submissions (Je-S) system.

The project lead is responsible for completing the application process on the Funding Service, but we expect all team members and project partners to contribute to the application.

Only the lead research organisation can submit an application to UKRI. You cannot submit applications with more than one lead organisation.

  2. Sign in or create a Funding Service account. To create an account, select your organisation, verify your email address, and set a password. If your organisation is not listed, email support@funding-service.ukri.org

For the Approach, explain how you have designed your work so that it:

  • is effective and appropriate to achieve your objectives
  • is feasible, and comprehensively identifies any risks to delivery and how they will be managed

For audit purposes, UKRI requires formal collaboration agreements to be put in place if an award is made.

  • name of facility, copied and pasted from the facility information list (DOCX, 35KB)
  • proposed usage or costs, or costs per unit where indicated on the facility information list
  • confirmation you have their agreement where required

If you will not need to use a facility, you will be able to indicate this in the Funding Service.

Peer review

We will invite at least three peers to review your application independently, against the published assessment criteria for this funding opportunity.

You will not be able to nominate reviewers for applications on the new Funding Service. Research councils will continue to select expert reviewers.

We are monitoring the requirement for applicant-nominated reviewers as we review policies and processes as part of the continued development of the new Funding Service.

You will be able to respond to reviewers’ comments if your application gains enough support.

Panel

If your application gains enough support from reviewers, your application, reviewers’ comments and your response will go to our most appropriate prioritisation panel.

Using this information, the panel will score it against our assessment criteria and rank it alongside other applications.
